In 1894 when Moody Publishers first got started, we got the word out one dusty street at a time using the only hottest technology- horse drawn wagons! If you told D.L. Moody that someday a future innovation called a “blog” would replace his wagon, and that instead of dusty streets the message would travel instead through an online landscape, I’m sure he would have tipped his hat politely but wondered if you were ill.
Times change, but the redemptive Message of the Gospel remains the same. That’s our commitment to you, our reader, and our underlying passion here at Moody Publishers.
Our primary hope for this blog is that it will serve you as an enjoyable way to stay connected with your favorite fiction authors and their books. We want you to get a look into their worlds and connect with them personally. We’ll do this through author posts, interviews, and news.
And just to have a little fun we’ll throw a contest in the mix from time to time. We’ll also give you sneak peeks at upcoming titles and a behind the scenes look into the world of Christian publishing.
More than that, we want this blog to be a place for conversation and for your opinions to be heard. Besides answering your questions to us, we’d like to ask you a few questions as well. Your opinions through surveys and polls will help us stay in touch with what interests you. Any particular authors you’d like to see us publish? Got a great story idea? Which book covers do you like best? What bonus material would you like to see us include the book?
To celebrate the arrival of our new blog, today and every day this week we’ll be giving away free books and prizes. Pass on the word to your friends and follow us on Twitter and Facebook as well.
Each day of the contest, we will feature a new title and give away 10 free copies per day. Today’s winners will receive a free copy of Raising Rain by Debbie Fuller Thomas. All you have to do is leave your comment below (along with your email--important for us to contact you if you are a winner!) answering the following question or responding to this post, and you will be entered into the contest. Winners will be selected at random and will be notified the day after their comment is posted. Good luck!
So let’s kick things off with a simple question today:
What kind of fiction books do you enjoy the most? Do you prefer reading a certain genre, author, time period, or writing style?
Raised to be a "new woman" by her mother and three college roommates in the 70s amid anti-war protests, feminist rallies, and finals, Rain Rasmussen discovers that putting her career first has left her overdrawn at the egg-bank, and her baby fever has now driven off her significant other. When her terminally ill mother demands a Celebration of Life before she dies, they all confront ghosts from the past on a stormy weekend in Monterey. Bebe, the roommate closest to Rain's heart, revisits choices that have impacted Rain the most, raising doubts about God's - and her own - willingness to forgive and to be forgiven.

I honestly don't read much fiction. That is, I haven't until lately. I read various sorts, thrillers, suspense, Amish, historical, etc. I simply love to read. I read Dekker's Circle Trilogy in one week. That's about 800-1,000 pages!
ReplyDeleteI'll read almost anything that I can get my hands on.
I used to prefer only contemporary and then I started trying other genres and dicsovered that I love all types of Christian fiction! I enjoy historical, suspense, Amish, contemporary, chick-lit, romance.....I love fiction!

Congratulations on your blog launch - it looks wonderful! And thanks for giving away Raising Rain today. I'm grabbing the button for my website!
ReplyDeleteDebbie Fuller Thomas
I will pretty much read any type of inspirational fiction. My favorite genre would have to be contemporary though. Amish and Historical fiction are right up there though! :)
ReplyDeletekatey(dot)1m(at)hotmail(dot)com
I love to read Christian Fiction....mostly historical and Amish but will read contemporary, suspense, and any other type of Christian fiction. I also like to read Debbie Macomber books from time to time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting the giveaway!
Blessings and hugs,

Happy blog launch!
ReplyDeleteI most prefer literary fiction and mysteries/suspense books. I love books that engage the faith in a deep, meaningful way.
wordlily@gmail.com
Great blog, Duane! I review books and interview authors on Christian radio, so I plan to be a frequent visitor.
ReplyDeleteFiction is definitely my favorite...just about any well-written fiction.
I love fiction and read mostly contemporary women's fiction. Great looking blog! I plan to visit often:)
ReplyDeletetalker445 at yahoo dot com
I don't think there isn't any type of Christian fiction I don't like reading. I suppose it would have to be a tie to 1800s pioneer fiction and contemporary Amish fiction. I love it all though!!
ReplyDeleteHi Duane. Great Blog- are you all going to do a Non fiction one? Hoping so.
ReplyDeleteChristian fiction sure has gained a number of readers since the financial crisis beset us in 2008. Graet esacape with a redemptive theme helps us all with our coping skills.
Blessings to you and Moody as you continue to place quality reads on our shelves.
I love Christian fiction, most genres anyway. I'm not big on historical or the contemporary Amish wave. I enjoy fiction that features people of color. I love the contemporary romance and women's fiction subgenres the most, though.
ReplyDeleteI like all types of Christian fiction although I prefer settings in modern times rather than historical fiction. I love Amish books and cozy mysteries. After I post this I am bookmarking your blog!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy most Christian fiction but lean towards historical fiction.
ReplyDeletewsmarple/@/gmail dot com
I like reading books that can help me learn something about God through what the characters are learning. Make the book meaty. An all-time fav is Janette Oke who was probably my first Christian fiction author that I read as a teen. I like the pioneer stories with real life and living for Christ. I like the Bible being used in the books and the characters learning about what God is doing in their lives.

Nice site I love fiction and would love to win Raising Rain by Debbie Thomas.
ReplyDeleteI am following you now
Love the new site.

Picking a favorite is hard. I can tell you what I tend to NOT like. But that's not the question is it.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd have to say historical fiction because I like to learn something new when I read a book. Actually I think I ready by author more often than genre.
jessjokin@juno.com
I like realistic Christian fiction that doesn't have to wrap everything up too neatly. I'd love to read Raising Rain. Contest is a great idea - thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love Christian Fiction. If it's a good story I read until it's finished. Some books I have read within 24 hours. I have a few authors whom I've read everything they've written.
ReplyDeleteWhat I don't like is when a series is complete, but the publisher makes you wait months or more between books. You have to reread the prior books to catch up so you remember the story line.
It's amazing how God can even use fiction to touch our lives. I can't recall the number of times I've been reading a novel and something has jumped out at me causing me to reflect on the thought. Of course, The Shack is an amazing example of God using fiction to touch people's hearts. I love Frank Peretti, and of course, what woman hasn't been blessed by reading Grace Livingston Hill. Have a chronic illness, I do a lot of reading. It gives me great pleasure to be able to lose myself in a work of fiction.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is historical Christian fiction. I enjoyed Eugenia Price's novels and miss her. I love Bodie Thoene's books. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mitford series by Jan Karon and hope she starts another series soon. I really love sweet stories about women who conquer their problems by applying Biblical principles.
ReplyDeleteI love most any type of Christian fiction, from historic to contemporary, but as someone else said, I love realistic plots and characters. Westerns and CSI types would probably be my least favorite, and Regency era or medieval times are my favorite eras.
ReplyDeletebarbarah06 (at) gmail (dot) com
I read both historical and contemporary, but I prefer historical. I'd like more selections in historical Christian fiction. There are plenty of American set stories to choose from, but not enough European.
ReplyDeleteI love historical fiction, although I read some contemporary fiction as well. I like to read about authentic characters, ones you would like to sit down with, chat with, hang-out with. I usually read several hours a day, and if the book grips my heart, I stay up to finish it. I love a book series, but when the last book is read, it's like a friend has just left for outer Mongolia never to return, I hate that. If I find an author I like, I usually read everything that they have written and tell everyone about my new "author friend". We just started a church library, and I am constantly looking for new, exciting reading material with a message.
ReplyDeleteMy email is jt4novels@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI love Christian fiction...both modern and historical. I use to gravitate toward inspirational romances, but these days I also enjoy other types of Christian fiction. (ie...recently have loved reading the Mitford series). I don't enjoy a lot of tragedy,,,when I read, I like to escape a bit and be made to smile, even laugh. But I love it when God uses a story to bring a truth home to me!
ReplyDeleteAt the moment the books I really love are from different time periods. I love a series too. I am open to other books though.
ReplyDeletesavingmomssanity at gmail dot com
I absolutely LOVE a good mystery/suspense and I also usually enjoy 1800's frontier books. The best books are ones that I walk away from with a deeper understanding of God's heart or feeling challenged in my walk with Him through what the characters in the book experienced.
ReplyDeleteshirley at shirleymcclay dot com
You name it, I like to read it. In fact, I never met a book I didn't want to read (and buy.) No electronic reader for me. Give me the smell and feel of paper.
ReplyDeleteleachman@comcast.net
I read lots of nonfiction books but I have been interested in historical fiction. Your blog is great. My email is sduncans@comcast.net.
ReplyDeleteI like mystery fiction. I also like "life" stories. I do not necessarily like romance stories with a boy gets girl happily ever after ending. I like this idea. great way to expose us to new authors! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI've fallen in love with christian chick-lit...can't read enough!
ReplyDeletebookstorylori{at}gmail{dot}com
I love Mystery/Thrilller, Ted Dekker for one. I also have two books out... check them out at www.thestonepublishinghouse.com
ReplyDeleteMystery/suspense--Terri Blackstock, Brandilyn Collins, Dee Henderson. Realistic fiction second-Karen Kingsbury.
ReplyDeleteKathycassel@knology.net
As a one of your authors, I can say with no bias whatsoever that Moody Fiction is my favorite! :)
ReplyDeleteI like anything with a good story, but will usually pick up a contemporary over a historical. However, I love historicals that feel contemporary, if that makes any sense. (Like Ann Shorey's The Edge of Light, any of Jane Kirkpatrick's, and Jennifer Erin Valent)
I prefer science fiction but have recently decided to mostly read uplifting and morally strong books, and those are hard to find in the sci-fi genre. Right now my favorites are kids' chapter books written in the early part of the 1900s.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy genres like historical, mystery, romance - but my favorite is the relational family drama, like what Debbie writes. Tuesday Night at the Blue Moon was excellent and I hope to read all that she writes. I look forward to following this blog and appreciate the chance to win a copy of Raising Rain.

ReplyDeleteamy@litfusegroup.com
My favorite authors are Karen Kingsbury, Kristen Heitzmann and Robin Lee Hatcher. I enjoy both contemporary and historical. I prefer to read Christian fiction. My least favorite would be murder mysteries. My husband and I read a lot! He prefers contemporary. Thanks!

oh and I love literary fiction - Is there Christian Literary Fiction?
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading many genres, but my favorite is historical fiction with an 18th century setting, and a literary bent. The bigger the book, the better. Put that story on the American frontier, and I couldn't be more pleased.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite Moody authors is Tracey Groot. Give her all the time she needs to write whatever she is writing. I'll wait for it!
lori_benton26 at hotmail dot com
I love all fiction...and I'm always looking for new books to read! New authors to try!
ReplyDeleteRmphilly@Hotmail.com
I like to read Christian fiction, whether it is a period piece or a thriller. I enjoy many different authors and styles of writing. If it is well written and believable, it is enjoyable. I have to actually say, I have never met a book I didn't like and if I did, I would never let it know, I would just find a new home for it!
ReplyDeletewalkinfaith4him@yahoo.com
Give me a good suspense novel and I'll have my head buried in the book until my eyes won't stay open. I also like contemporary fiction, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteYAY! Congrats on the new blog! I started my blog last year and I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteAs for books that I LOVE to read well it's pretty much any kind of historical fiction! I also LOVE romances of any kind! I'm a real sucker for a good love story! I also like dramatic stories too and have The Familiar Stranger in my TBR pile!

I love to read Christian Romance and love to read so many different writers. I love Robin Lee Hatcher, Tracie Peterson, Kim Vogel Sawyer and almost anyone I can get a hold of. I love the historical but also love reading some contempory. I read everything Debbie Macomber has written but her latest one. I just love to read and it has inspired me to write. I am working on writing with a few writers in a book, which I think is a great start for me. Blessings...Gee glucerom83628@aim.com
ReplyDeleteI love to read all types of genres and authors. I do not read the back of the book to see what the book is about. I like titles....they jump out at you and get you intrigued to read them. By reading the back of the book you tend to sometimes read more into it than needs to be. I love to read. I carry a book around with me either in my purse or on my ipod so that I can read. I read in line at the bank, grocery store...you name it where you're stuck waiting...I've got my nose in a book.

I love fiction! I like to read anything that I get my hands on. I have a soft spot for historicals, but I also like a good contemporary. I'm ever on the lookout for new authors...and hope to be one myself someday. I'm looking forward to following this blog.

I have over 3 thousand books in my own library - so it's hard for me to pick any 1 author. As for what genre I prefer historical romances are my favorite. I usually read at least 3 a week. I love the regency era and old Scotland - though there aren't as many inspirational books being written in those time periods.
ReplyDeleteI do read contemporary novels as well. One of my 10 favorites was "The Familiar Stranger." I think it just depends on the story and writing.
Please enter me in the drawing, this sounds like a very compelling book.

Wonderful blog! It's great to see a blog of this nature taking off like this from one of my favorite publishers.
ReplyDeleteYou asked the impossible question. I love interesting time periods, especially those set in unusual times or places. Historicals, mysteries, speculative fiction. Just take me somewhere I haven't been before.
I look forward to seeing what you do next!
Great blog and a great giveaway, congrats!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite fiction is historical, but I also love lots of contemporary authors as well.
Please count me in for this awesome book!

I like historical fiction, and my favorite Moody author is Cathy Gholke - author of William Henry is a Fine Name, and I Have Seen Him in the Watchfires. Please publish more books like that!
ReplyDeleteThanks,

I don't have time to read a book right now, so please don't enter me in the contest. I just couldn't resist writing something--anything-- when it took me so long to scroll down to the end of the comments! LOL.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new blog-site!
I read widely too, but prefer Christian sci-fi or fantasy.
I love contemporary stories that deal with issues faced by women. My favorite Moody author is Christina Berry. (No, the fact that she's my duaghter has absolutely no bearing on that at all--why would you ask??!!) I think this will be a great new blog.
ReplyDeleteSherrie Ashcraft

Sorry--I really do know how to spell "daughter!"
ReplyDeleteI prefer contemporary fiction from all different types of genres including young adult.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward in reading this blog!
marakim@gmail.com
What a great idea! I am a lover of books and will read anything! Prefer books I can share with my teenage daughters. Always looking for new Christian selections/authors.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy reading inspirational contemporary romance stories the most. If there is a bit of crochet or knitting involved in the story, that is a plus. I don't care for first person or historical fiction with the exception of the era of mail order brides. That said, I have read a few murder mysteries and sci fi things as well though generally speaking I turn to television for that.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the new blog. Great idea!
craftycorral@gmail.com
I enjoy most genres, but I love suspense and historical romance. I also like futuristic type books minus aliens (like Kerry Nietz's, "A Star Curiously Singing).
ReplyDeleteLately, I've been reading Cathy Marie Hake, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Jane Kirkpatrick, and Kristen Heitzmann. I read approximately one book per week. If I had more time, it would be two. :)
susanjreinhardt (at) gmail (dot) com
Blessings,
Susan
I love most genres. However I think good novels have to be really emotionally engaging and challening. I enjoy books from all time periods but I think modern books tend to be most relevant to me which I especially love.
ReplyDeletekatharina.thwaites@gmail.com
This blog is a wonderful idea. :)
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question:
I like to mix it up and read from a variety of Christian fiction genres. If I read five Romantic Suspense novels in a row - they all start sounding the same.
If I need to laugh, I look for Copeland or Bateman.
When I want to Cry: Kingsbury
If I have more time to invest in a novel/Series: Rivers, Heitzmann or Thoene.
Romantic Suspense: Coble, Nichols or Blackstock
For a light read, I turn to: Gunn
A new author that I'm interested in seeing more from is Christina Parish.
I've also enjoyed several books written by Robin Lee Hatcher and Lori Wick.
Obviously, I've read quite a few books in the last few years. But what I haven't found is a an author who sets his or her stories in the great outdoors and then vividly describes God's wonderful creation.
Any suggestions?

What kind of fiction books do you enjoy the most? Do you prefer reading a certain genre, author, time period, or writing style?
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the newer Amish books -- 5 have passed through my hands in recent weeks. My favorite was Plain Jayne by Hillary Manton Lodge. These books have nudged me to simplify my life and to go a bit to a simple way of eating -- fresh foods, etc.
Thanks, Moody Publishers for this opportunity to comment.
